Let’s just start with the truth: most of us are drinking wine wrong. It’s not the glass, it’s not the brand. It’s about how to serve it. If you serve it wrong, you are drinking it wrong and not enjoying it to its full potential.

We are not taking the proper steps to worry about the temperature of the wine. In this article, we will instill the importance of how much Degrees Matter!

I’m not talking about swirling and burying your nose into the glass to see what kind of fruit you are getting, I’m talking about temperature. Too cold? Your wine tastes like water with ambition. Too warm? It’s basically cough syrup with a superiority complex.

But there’s good news. There are some very smart people in the world. Smart people who want to help people. The lovely people at Wakefield Wines have figured out a simple, yet very effective solution. A thermometer. On. The. Bottle. Seriously.

Wakefield Wine is here to help you feel like a wine sommelier in front of your friends and family and assist you in the education around the importance of temperature in wine.

As soon as I started seeing this way, it set a new standard of how I enjoy wine. I haven’t gone back.

Wine Temperature Is a Big Deal (Seriously)

Think of wine like an orchestra. When everything’s in balance, it brings out the best in everything.

A balanced glass of wine brings so much. It expands and highlights the flavour, aroma, acidity, tannins, and makes for a more enjoyable experience overall. But if the temperature’s off, it’s like the violins didn’t show up and the drummer is fast asleep. It ruins the whole experience.

You wouldn’t take your dinner from a Michelin-star restaurant and heat it up in the microwave, would you?

After all, it’s a respect to the winemaker. Those who work so hard on creating the best harvest and best wine they can for that year, for you. It’s good to serve as it was intended.

If Your Wine Is Too Cold?

All the flavours of the wine become muted. Sauvignon Blanc tastes like lemon water. Reds? Flat and lifeless.

If Your Wine Is Too Warm?

Suddenly the wine you waited to enjoy all day potentially falls apart. The alcohol practically hits you in the face and all the qualities just end up fading into the background.

It also demolishes the very structure of the wine. White wines need that chill to stay crisp. If red wines are served too cold, those lovely tannins turn into a bitter handshake.

There’s a sweet spot, and it’s not just wine snob nonsense—it’s science.

Wakefield Wines Solved the Temperature Problem—Finally

Wakefield Wines, a family-owned winery from the Clare Valley in South Australia, embedded thermometers on their wine bottles. No smartphone apps. No fancy gadgets. No additional hardware you have to bring to the party. Just look at the label and boom—it tells you if the wine’s ready for your enjoyment or not.

The thermometer? It’s colour-coded and smart, but also just… logical. It’s here to help.

Not to mention, the rest of the bottle is designed well too. The seahorses on their label? It’s not just for show. When they built the winery back in 1969, they found fossilized seahorses in the soil. So yeah, they made it their emblem—and have been giving back to Project Seahorse ever since. Also the three seahorses represent the three generations of winemakers as well.

Let’s Talk About the Wines

There’s something about each of these bottles that hits differently. Maybe it’s the Aussie sun. Maybe it’s the oak. Maybe it’s their  experience and deep family roots. Either way, you can find all of these beauties at your local liquor store. So available for something that comes from the other side of the world.

Let’s talk wines

Wakefield Wines Estate Label Sauvignon Blanc 2024 – $17.95

Perfect between 6-8 degrees Celsius

This one is straightforward with class. Fresh, crisp, award-winning. Vegan too. Perfect chilled—but not ice-cold, okay?

Wakefield Wines Estate Label Chardonnay 2022 – $17.95

Perfect between 10-12 degrees Celsius

A hit wine for anyone who wants something different compared to California. It’s  mellow, not overpowering. Light oak, but plays nice and balanced. This one is perfect for the hot summer days ahead.

Wakefield Wines Estate Label Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 – $19.95

Perfect between 16-18 degrees Celsius

With fruit from Clare Valley, mixed with the Limestone Coast, this makes a bold statement in a glass. It reminds you of blackcurrant and warm spice. Let this one breathe. Let it sit with you in the open air for a bit and it will reward you.

Wakefield Wines Estate Label Shiraz 2022 – $19.95

Perfect between 16-18 degrees Celsius

Full-bodied, but smooth. The wine that made me like Shiraz. It’s full of flavour like the Cabernet Sauvignon, but it’s spicy, balanced with dark berries, and a little smoke. Pour this at just the right temp and it’s like velvet in a glass.

Getting The Temperature of Your Wine Just Right

So, you pick one up from your liquor store and are excited to enjoy it, but it’s not the right temperature. What do you do?

We consulted with Angela Aiello, otherwise known as @SuperWineGirl to help us with this part.

She put together a short guide on how to get your wine to the optimal temperature without watering down the wine itself.

Here Is A Temperature Tine:

How To Warm Up Your Wine

Take it out, hold the glass or bottle, maybe let it sit on the counter. Don’t microwave it, don’t even think about it.

How To Cool Down Your Wine

Put the bottle in an ice bath. Toss in some salt. Wait 15-20 mins. Or wet paper towel + freezer trick.

Either way, all you have to do is check the thermometer on the bottle and you are set.

Why This All Matters

Look, winemakers spend years growing grapes, aging wine, balancing flavours and ensuring that the weather, climate, rain and everything are all delicately balanced in every bottle. And what do we do? We serve it warm because we forgot to chill it, or too cold because we panicked.

This is about respecting the art of wine and enjoying it as intended. Like we said earlier, Degrees Matter!

Wakefield Wines Is The Wine Mentor We Needed

From seahorse fossils to temperature tech to sustainable farming in British Columbia—they’re not messing around. Wakefield Wines isn’t just putting wine in your glass. They’re putting intention, family history, and a bit of Australian confidence into every bottle. They are here to help. They want you to be the star of the show.

They want you to feel more confident about wine. They want you to enjoy every drop to the fullest.

So, please enjoy responsibly…and at the right temperature.
